L’appel du Vide

L’appel du Vide

By: Rachel Shower

I’ve heard it called
L’appel du vide
-the call of the void-
That sudden urge
To do something
Brash and regrettable
Simply because
You can.

I’ve felt
That tug at my soul,
When my mind
Is at its darkest,
My heart
At its lowest.

I’ve thought
How easy it would be
To swerve
Into oncoming traffic;
To take a blade
To the soft skin
Found on my wrists;
To pull the trigger
And make all the
Horrible,
Terrifying,
Taunting thoughts of
Inferiority,
Self-hate,
Anxiety,

GO
AWAY

Once and for all.

But.
I think better of it.

I remember
That there are

Adventures to be had,
Friends to be made,
Books to be read,
Soulmates to be met,
Art to be admired,
Souls to be healed,
Flowers to be smelled,
Doors to be opened,
Pictures to be taken.

But.
Most importantly,
There is

A life to be lived

And lived to the fullest.
